Life can change in a second, sometimes with tragic or catastrophic results. Often an auto accident can be avoided if drivers follow basic driving rules, such as staying alert, watching road conditions and staying away from common distractions such as cell phones or radios.
Oregon State Police (OSP) is continuing the investigation into Thursday afternoon’s two vehicle head-on crash on Highway 42 near the Douglas/Coos County line that resulted in non-life threatening personal injuries to two people.
According to Sergeant Josh Young, on December 29, 2011 at approximately 12:18 p.m. a 2009 Ford Focus four-door driven by SHERRY D. UNDERWOOD, age 51, from Coquille, was eastbound on Highway 42 near milepost 43 when it crossed the centerline while negotiating a curve. The Ford entered into the westbound lane and collided nearly head-on with a 2000 Volkswagen Jetta driven by KARISSA N. KIRKPATRICK, age 16, from Myrtle Point.
KIRKPATRICK was entrapped and extricated by fire personnel from Bridge and Myrtle Point Fire Departments.
Both drivers were transported by ambulance to Coquille Valley Hospital. Airbags deployed in both vehicles and safety restraints were in use.
OSP troopers from the Coos Bay Area Command office are continuing the investigation.
Coos County Sheriff’s Office and ODOT also assisted at the scene. Traffic was restricted to one lane during the investigation.
OSP and ODOT urges drivers to remember road and visibility conditions may unexpectedly change during the holiday and winter season.
